The continuous proliferation of mobile and wearable smart devices, together with their increasing computational power and multitude of sensors, has given birth to Mobile Augmented Reality (MAR).  Novel MAR applications can greatly facilitated our lives in many aspects, but have also inevitably raised people’s concerns about visual privacy at the same time. In this talk, I will first introduce Talk2Me, an augmented reality social network that enables users to disseminate information in a distributed way and view other’s information instantly. Talk2Me advertises users’ messages, together with their face–signature, to every nearby device in a Device–to–Device fashion. When a user looks at nearby persons through her camera–enabled wearable devices (e.g., Google Glass), the framework automatically extracts the face–signature of the person of interest, compares it with the previously captured signatures, and presents the information shared by this person to the user. I will then present Cardea, a context–aware and interactive visual privacy protection framework that enforces privacy protection according to people’s privacy preferences. The framework provides people with fine– grained visual privacy protection using: i) personal privacy profiles, with which people can define their context–dependent privacy preferences; and ii) visual indicators: face features, for devices to automatically locate individuals who request privacy protection; and iii) hand gestures, for people to flexibly interact with cameras to temporarily change their privacy preferences.

Professor Pan Hui received his PhD from the Computer Laboratory at University of Cambridge, and both his Bachelor and MPhil degrees from the University of Hong Kong. He is the Nokia Chair Professor in Data Science and Professor of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki. He is also the director of the HKUST-DT Systems and Media Lab at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. His research team is highly multicultural and international with researchers from over 14 countries. He believes diversity brews creativity and novelty. He was a senior research scientist and then a Distinguished Scientist for Telekom Innovation Laboratories (T-labs) Germany and an adjunct Professor of social computing and networking at Aalto University. His industrial profile also includes his research at Intel Research Cambridge and Thomson Research Paris. His research has been generously sponsored by Nokia, Deutsche Telekom, Microsoft Research, and China Mobile. He has published more than 200 research papers and with over 14,500 citations. He has 30 granted and filed European and US patents in the areas of augmented reality, data science, and mobile computing. He has founded and chaired numerous IEEE/ACM conferences/workshops, and has been serving on the organising and technical program committee of numerous top international conferences including ACM SIGCOMM, MobiSys, IEEE Infocom, ICNP, SECON, IJCAI, AAAI, ICWSM and WWW. He is an associate editor for the leading journals IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing and IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing. He is an IEEE Fellow, an ACM Distinguished Scientist, and a member of the IEEE Computer Society Fellow Evaluation Committee 2018.
